Can dance be used to find yourself? It’s possible. That’s what helped me when I was once an adolescent teenager growing up. Periodically I find myself coming back to dance in my own bubble in order to clear the mental clutter for a moment.
It’s possible that I’ve drilled the skill of free-style dance so much that it has never left. The other day, went to an audition. Even though I had not been involved in the dance community for so long I still felt comfortable enough in the freestyle segment. My choreographic performance could have been better, but that’s never been the ultimate goal in movement for me.
So as for finding oneself through dance, it’s totally possible. It can be a form of active meditation. A way to raise your vibration. It may not always pan out that way, especially if you focus on the thoughts of “Am I doing it right?”
For beginners, there is technically a right technique to move, even within street dance. However, technique is secondary to feel when it comes to dance as a meditation. How you move will be less important than how you feel when you dance if you’re using it as active meditation. Some are aggressive, some need to move slow. Some would rather move in small increments, some need large sweeping motions.
Meditation helps in healing, and not all meditation needs to be sitting still. There are forms of meditation from ancient traditions of tribal groups and non religious movements, just as there are those that come from religious schools of thought. There’s no particular right or wrong way, except that the wrong way will make you go crazy and paranoid, and the right way will open up your chakras and meridians to the true possibilities of human potential, and your own potential.
The only way that it will be wrong is if you hold on to fear, anger, or hate. You’ll be fucking up the vibe, it’s not easy, but you gotta let all that go. If you can clear your mind to feeling good, feeling positive vibrations, and letting go of negative energies, then you will be on the right path.
Good luck, let me know if you want to talk about this. Find me on social, or email me, troy@troyaustria.com . Comments will be available soon, just gotta find a good system because I don’t want any bot spam. haha
